What Are We Fighting For?
By Wea H. Lee

Along life’s busy road, we should occasionally pause and ask ourselves: Why do we work so hard? What are we truly fighting for?

When I was young, I fought to make a living and find my footing in an unfamiliar country. I arrived in America with only five hundred dollars, carrying both dreams and uncertainty. My greatest hope was simple: to build a stable, dignified life for my family through my own hard work.

After decades of building businesses, I have come to understand that success means more than what we accumulate. It also means creating opportunities for others.

A newspaper carries the voices of a community. An international trade center connects people across cultures and borders. Behind every growing business are employees and families whose futures depend on it. As more people place their trust in us, our work carries a responsibility we cannot take lightly.

Today, my answer to “What are we fighting for?” is clearer than it was in my youth. We work for our families’ well-being, for the next generation’s future, for fair opportunities for hardworking people, and for a community where people of different backgrounds can live together with mutual respect.

That commitment also requires restraint. We must listen when we disagree, remain honest when interests conflict, and keep our doors open when we have the ability to help. Trust takes years to build, yet it can be broken in a moment.

As a Chinese American, I cherish my cultural roots and recognize my responsibility to the country I call home. Through journalism, business exchanges, and community service, I hope to give people more opportunities to know one another and overcome the misunderstandings that grow from unfamiliarity. These efforts may seem modest, but they are worth continuing.

Our time in this world is limited. Wealth and buildings alone cannot measure the value of a life. People will also remember whose hand we held during difficult times, what problems we helped our community solve, and which young people found hope because we believed in them.

There is still work to do, and we must keep moving forward. May we remember the people we first set out to protect. And with every achievement, may we leave a better path for those who follow.

That is what we are fighting for.
